چکیده

Abstract We investigate a map-based model of paced cardiac muscle in the presence of closed-loop feedback control. The model relates the duration of an action potential to the preceding diastolic interval as well as the preceding action potential duration and thus has some amount of ‘memory.’ We find that the domain of control depends on this memory, independently of the specific functional form of the map. The memory-dependent domain of control can encompass large feedback gains, thus providing the first possible explanation of the recent experimental results of Hall et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett, 88, 198102 (2002)] on controlling alternans in small pieces of rapidly-paced cardiac muscle.

Condition for alternans and its control in a two-dimensional mapping model of paced cardiac dynamics.

We investigate a two-dimensional mapping model of a paced, isolated cardiac cell that relates the duration of the action potential to the two preceding diastolic intervals as well as the preceding action potential duration. The model displays rate-dependent restitution and hence memory. We derive a criterion for the stability of the 1:1 response pattern displayed by the model. This criterion ca...

The role of short term memory and conduction velocity restitution in alternans formation.

Alternans is the periodic beat-to-beat short-long alternation in action potential duration (APD), which is considered to be a precursor of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. In extended cardiac tissue, electrical alternans can be either spatially concordant (SCA, all cells oscillate in phase) or spatially discordant (SDA, cells in different regions oscillate out of phase). SDA gi...

Calcium alternans is due to an order-disorder phase transition in cardiac cells.

Electromechanical alternans is a beat-to-beat alternation in the strength of contraction of a cardiac cell, which can be caused by an instability of calcium cycling. Using a distributed model of subcellular calcium we show that alternans occurs via an order-disorder phase transition which exhibits critical slowing down and a diverging correlation length. We apply finite size scaling along with ...

The interrelations among stochastic pacing, stability, and memory in the heart.

Low pacing variability in the heart has been clinically reported as a risk factor for lethal cardiac arrhythmias and arrhythmic death. In ia previous simulation study, we demonstrated that stochastic pacing sustains an antiarrhythmic effect by moderating the slope of the action potential duration (APD) restitution curve, by reducing the propensity of APD alternans, converting discordant to conc...

Hysteresis effect implicates calcium cycling as a mechanism of repolarization alternans.

BACKGROUND T-wave alternans is due to alternation of membrane repolarization at the cellular level and is a risk factor for sudden cardiac death. Recently, a hysteresis effect has been reported in patients whereby T-wave alternans, once induced by rapid heart rate, persists even when heart rate is subsequently slowed. We hypothesized that alternans hysteresis is an intrinsic property of cardiac...
